When you shop through Maatiam's network of retailers, Maatiam is paid a commission. We pass through the listed commission to the nonprofit organizations of your choice. Outside the listed percentages, we retain a smaller portion (typically 1/3) of retailer commissions to fund our development, operation, and growth. For example, we donate 7% and retain 3% of the total 10% commission received from Drugstore.com.

While the majority of all purchases will generate donation, each retailer has its own rules and some purchases or part of purchases may not qualify. For example gift wrapping or shipping usually do not qualify. You can read about the list of products and services that generate donation by clicking on the text link under each retailer's logo.

To make sure your purchases are credited to both you and your nonprofit, you need to create an account and sign in before making a purchase. If you use the same computer, you may not need to sign in during subsequent visits. Look for the green check mark on the home page, or on the View Retailer page, or at the click out (go.aspx) page.

Also, donations are calculated based on reports provided to us by our partner retailers. Our retailers may take up to 4 weeks to provide reports. We process these reports at beginning of each month. Note that for flights and hotels, retailers consider the transaction complete once you have completed your flight or hotel stay. Final donations are calculated once per quarter approximately 60 days after end of each quarter and reflect final purchases, returns, and payment from our retail partners.

Unlike our other online retailers, Amazon.com does not report individual shopper purchase amounts to Maatiam. Therefore, donations made based on your purchases at Amazon.com don't appear in your profile. Of course, these donations are made to the nonprofit organizations you designate, just like any other online retailer.

Yes, purchases made at Amazon third party retailers, including Target, Office Depot, and smaller retailers also generate donations.

When you register, you may choose exactly what information Maatiam will share with the nonprofit organizations you are supporting.

Yes, at any time you may go back to Directory and choose a different nonprofit organization to support.

Maatiam uses the web search powered by GuideStar. Our directory contains more than 800,000 501(c)3 nonprofits registered with the IRS. Newly formed 501(c)3 nonprofits, non 501(c)3 nonprofits, and nonprofits opted out of GuideStar web search do not show up in the search result.

Maatiam uses GuideStar Search which provides comprehensive information about most nonprofits in the nation.

GuideStar's mission is to help improve the effectiveness of the nonprofit sector through the collection and presentation of exhaustive information about nonprofit organizations. All 1.5 million nonprofits listed with GuideStar are formally registered with the IRS or have proven they meet all IRS criteria for exempt organizations. Maatiam partners with GuideStar so that you can be certain that the organization you've selected for your generosity is a legitimate nonprofit. Data is collected directly from the charities and from the IRS Business Master File, IRS Forms 990, and 990s EZ.

No. The IRS limits tax deductibility for donations to the amount paid over and above the fair market price for an item. Since the prices you pay when buying from our retailer partners through our site are the same as if you purchased directly from the merchant, no tax-deductible event occurs. But hey - you are helping your nonprofit with just a few clicks, for free.
